Elders on Ice Floes
In Autumn 2013, I embarked on a journey of asking questions about how my father died - he tried to keep his suicide a secret, but we found out what happened in the aftermath. In the wake of trying to make sense and meaning from this experience, I began research and interviews on exploring the cultural determinants of suicide and how in our dominant culture, the elderly have the highest incidence of suicide, while in the oldest cultures of North America, namely Inuit culture, youth have the highest suicide rate in the world.
This film project is currently in research & predevelopment. In Summer 2014, it won the HotDocs-Manifesto Pitch Summit. You can view the story of the summit and the concept reel in the ajacent images.
